Uganda

The Grail in Uganda started in 1953 at the invitation of Archbishop Cabana of Lubaga and Bishop Joseph Kiwanuka of Masaka. From the beginning, we put emphasis on health, education, and social services. We also help African women understand their role in the church and take responsibility for social development. Over the years, our goals are still upheld with many additional activities in the apostolate and transformation of the world for Christ.

Projects and Activities:

      • Healthcare
We provide primary health care and promotion in several places, including Masaka and Sheema District.  Our members are also actively involved in Lubaga Hospital and have established programs to assist women.  These include counseling services, support groups, and income generation as part of the HIV/AIDS program. In addition, immunization programs are also provided.
      • Education
Our members provide leadership and staff in each of the following:
        • Uganda Catholic Social Training Centre
        • Ggulama Social Training Centre
        • St. Charles Lwanga Primary SchoolWhile St. Charles forms children into responsible adults, the other two centers provide development training, which significantly contributes to overcoming poverty.
      • Sustainable Agriculture
Each of our centers is committed to its own sustainable agricultural activities. In this way, they can produce necessities for themselves and for cash income. Such projects include the following:
        • Zero Grazing
        • Poultry Rearing
        • Piggery
        • Vegetable and Fruit Growing
        • Moreover, some centers support their community through other cash projects that are not based on agriculture, such as winemaking.
      • Spiritual Search
We are composed of Catholic women who are also active members of our local Catholic church communities. Our gatherings focus on community prayers and liturgy, and we traditionally celebrate the feasts of Holy Thursday, Uganda Martyrs, Pentecost, and All Saints Day. We also value the importance of our spiritual formation.  Opportunities for group prayer and formation are made available through reflection days, retreats, and workshops. Individual members are offered longer formation experiences from time to time.
